How can we discern periods of change in language use automatically rather than using predefined periods of change when analysing language use? We show how we discern periods of change automatically and the valuable insight one gains not only on change in language use but also on the interplay between linguistic levels (here lexis and grammar) working jointly in creating a balance between expressivity and communicative efficiency.
